have you got anything from Rent a Center (RAC)??

my fiancee and i have been earning a little more money and now we can afford more stuff i want a new livingroom i see people getting stuff from RAC all the time... is it a good deal? or they just make you think is cheap and you end up paying for years. thank you!

While I appreciate the honest answer from the person who works for RAC, I have to disagree with his main point that RAC is a good deal for many people. Almost everyone can do better elsewhere.

It's not just that you pay more at RAC, it's that you pay so very much more. Your total payments will be *many times* the value of the furniture or appliances if you were to go out and buy them.

They never emphasize the total costs involved. In fact, if you go there, they will talk mainly about the payments. Just $50 a month, just $100, whatever.

But you will be paying that for years and years. If you work hard and your income keeps increasing, you will want something different long before you are finished paying for what you get today. And, if you miss even one payment, they can come and take everything away, even if it is the last payment. That's why they call it RENT-to-own. Until you have paid it all off--all that enormous overcharge--it is just considered a rental and you could lose it all.

It's good that you are starting to earn some more money. And I understand that you want nicer things. That's normal and there is nothing wrong with it. But if you can hold off buying until you have saved up enough to pay cash, you will get better furniture for MUCH less money, and you will have all those un-made future payments to use for other things.

If you simply cannot live with your current furniture any longer, then look for a sale at a "real" store and see what financing would cost. You will probably find you can do much better at a regular store.

Or, do what we did. We went every week to Goodwill and Salvation Army stores. Don't laugh. People sometimes give away really fine furniture, and we bought it for a song. How about a Henredon dresser that would probably have cost at least $2000 new, which we bought for $40. Or a perfectly good sofa that would be probably $1200-$1400. We bought that one for $85. We used that stuff for at least 10 years. Then we bought new things. Frankly, the stuff from Goodwill was better quality than what we bought later on, even if it wasn't new when we got it.

Rent a Center is for two kinds of people. The first kind are people whose credit is so terrible that no regular store will give them credit. The second kind are people who are suckers.

If you are the first kind of person and have problems with handling credit, you may also be at risk of missing a payment someday and losing everything, as I said above. So you should never buy at a place that adds to your risk. And try very hard to avoid being that second kind of person.

Big Payoff For Being Prepared For a RAC Audit

A Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) can create complete chaos in a company when you are not prepared.
