A basketball of radius 8 inches sits in the corner of a room, tangent to the floor, and 2 walls. A steel ball sits in the same corner of the room wedged in the open space so that it is tanget to the floor, the 2 walls and the basketball. Find the radius of the steel ball. Post explanation.

The distance from the center of the ball to the corner of the room is:

D = √4² + 4² + 4² = 4√3

The distance from the edge of the basketball to the corner is 4√3 - 4.

If the radius of the steel ball is "r", then the distance from the basketball to the steel ball's center is "r" and the distance to the corner is "r√3".

r + r√3 = 4√3 - 4

r(1 + √3) = 4√3 - 4

4√3 - 4
----------- = r
1 + √3

r = 1.0718 <==ANSWER
