I have a golf equipment question.?

I have 3 spots in my bag. I really need a sand wedge and a lob wedge. I also need a hybrid (2 iron). Does anyone have suggestions on good and inexpensive models. Low launch hybrid would be best. Is the Tour Edge Bazooka JMAX Tour any good? Thanks

Hello From Orlando: Golf In Orlando - Playing Links-style At The Royal St. Cloud - Unpretentious Golf At Its Best

For a real links-style golf experience we discovered the Royal St. Cloud Golf Links, located in St. Cloud, about 25 minutes southeast of the Orlando airport or the Disney area. The Royal St. Cloud Links greet you with a rolling layout of links-style fairways, punctuated by classic links bunkers that feature names such as Hell, Spectacles, Devil's Pocket and Hoofprint. True to its link heritage, every club in the bag will be utilized as the terrain is naturally varied.

Unlike other Orlando golf courses, the Royal St. Cloud is free of any residential developments and offers a pure golf experience. The design features four sets of tees and from the blue tee offers a championship length of 7,111 yards and a 74.6 rating, all on flawless fairways and silky-smooth Tifeagle greens.

Its motto, as printed above the entrance to the club house is "Original Golf Played Here", and indeed the Royal St. Cloud features original style golf at its unpretentious best. I had a chance to talk to Bill Filson, the Director of Golf and since 2002 co-owner of this facility.

Bill has an extensive teaching background. He has personally studied under some of the top-ranked teaching professionals and brings 12 years of teaching experience that featured beginners to PGA tour professionals. Bill has consistently been a top-ranked PGA Professional. The Royal St. Cloud's teaching staff is complemented by Dave Rummels who brings 17 years of valuable PGA Tour experience with him and can share advice from the "Tour" with the students. Associate Professional, Doug Holloway, has 16 years coaching experience.

At the Royal St. Cloud Golf Links the commitment to teaching the game of golf commitment includes state-of-the art video equipment and even a teaching tent for inclement weather. Bill explained that they run very reasonably priced children's clinics at $7.00 per clinic and the club has 120 members in their junior program. Bill explained that his golf course serves a value-based market that is composed of local residents, snowbirds escaping the cold northern winters, and British golfers, a very loyal crowd who refer this facility to many of their friends back home.

The Royal St. Cloud Golf Links have been rated as one of the Top 5 Most Underrated Golf Courses in the Orlando area and they have hosted the 2004 and 2005 British Junior Amateur. With its wide-open fairways the course looks deceptively simple, however, I experienced very quickly the unique challenges offered by the Royal St. Cloud. Traditional links golf is played on the ground, unfortunately I still managed to find water several times, despite the generously open fairways.

The other feature I really enjoyed were a number of the ponds on the back nine of the course that were playing host to a variety of local wildlife and water birds. I particularly enjoyed watching a very rare specimen of wood stork stalking the edges of a pond for food, and a crane standing upright with stretched out wings. The course had a very relaxed, casual and friendly feel to it and we enjoyed a tasty hot dog after our game on the beautiful patio outside the clubhouse as a way to cap off a very enjoyable golf experience on a gorgeous day.

(25-35 minute approximate drive time)
• Take Osceola Parkway to the Florida Turnpike
• Take Exit 244 to Hwy 192, turn left.

Golf Flexibility Tests -- Compare your Flexibility to a Top Golfer

Here are some simple golf flexibility tests you can do to see if your current flexibility is hurting your golf game or not. And the first golf flexibility test is the sit-and-reach test. This test is basically an assessment of the flexibility of your lower back and hamstrings, but it can also be a good gauge of your general flexibility. To complete this test you need a box and a ruler. And it's a good idea to have someone help you with this test.

First of all warm up thoroughly and then sit with your feet placed fully extended out in front of you onto the box. Keep your legs straight and reach as far forward as possible with your fingers stretched forward. Do not bounce for this test, just stretch as far as you can and then get someone to measure your distance either past or before the box. The measurements past the box should be recorded as PLUS distances, whereas in front of the box should be recorded as MINUS distances.

SCORING TABLE FOR THE SIT-AND-REACH TEST

Excellent +15cm

Good + 10cm

Fair + 5cm

Average 0cm

Poor less than 0 cm

This second group of flexibility tests will clearly show you how flexible you are for golf. And if you want to play to your potential as a golfer then you should get a score of "zero" for all four tests.

Golf Flexibility Test 1

With your back to a wall, raise both arms to shoulder height along the wall. Now walk forward and see how far from the wall you can stand and still touch it with the fingertips of both hands, with your arms straight. Your arms should be at shoulder height and you should stand well balanced on straight legs. Don't bend your knees or lean back. Measure the distance between your heels and the wall.

Golf Flexibility Test 2

Sit on a stool placed against the front edge of an open door. Try to keep both your neck and lower back against the edge of the door. Lift your arms up and back over your head. Place your palms flat, one on each side of the door, and try to reach as far back as possible. Measure from the edge of the door to your fingertips.

Golf Flexibility Test 3

Try to make the fingertips of both hands touch behind your back. Do this by putting your left hand behind your back from underneath and try to raise it as high as you can, now place your right hand over your shoulder and bring it down as close as you can to your left hand. Alternate between hands then measure the gap between your "best" and your "worst" side. Combine the results. If your fingers do not touch at all on one side, subtract the shortfall from the result.

Golf Flexibility Test 4

Hold your arms straight out in front of you and see what is the shortest piece of cord you can stretch between your hands while still being able to pass your hands over your head and down your back. Measure the length of the cord.

*Sample Top Golfer Results From These Golf Flexibility Tests*

Golf Flexibility Test No. 1 ==> Top Golfer: 49cm

Golf Flexibility Test No. 2 ==> Top Golfer: 35cm

Golf Flexibility Test No. 3 ==> Top Golfer: +12cm, + 3cm

Golf Flexibility Test No. 4 ==> Top Golfer: 99cm

To get your golf flexibility result, simply subtract all the results. If you get negative results for test 3 then you will need to add them, to get your result. This example is what a "top golfer" result would be: 99cm - 12cm - 3cm - 35cm - 49cm = 0cm

If you get nowhere near zero as your result, then you will have some work cut out for you, but it doesn't take long to see big improvements in flexibility so don't be disheartened if you prove to be very stiff. But remember, when doing any flexibility exercises it is most beneficial to do them after you are warmed up.

How To Choose The Right Golf Wedge

Improving your short game is something that can be most effectively accomplished through intensive instruction at a golf academy. In addition to the golf academy experience, anyone can improve their short game by choosing the right golf wedge. If you have ever watched a pro tournament, you have noticed that players can hit shots in succession with each one stopping just inches away from the hole.

If you have wondered how this is possible, well, the golf wedge is the answer to this question. Golf wedges are clubs that are specially tailored and designed for the short game, which makes sense when you consider that approximately 70 percent of shots in a golf game are done from within 150 to 100 yards in. In other words, it is all well and good that you can drive over 250 yards from the tee, but it will not help you in your short game.

If you only have one wedge currently, you should definitely consider the purchase of more wedges to be essential, and if you are smart enough to bring your wedges with you during your next golf academy course, you will be able to learn the correct techniques for, and specializations of, each type in greater detail. If you have between 15 and 20 feet, for example, then you will want a lofted club, or one that has a face angled back from the vertical, like a sand wedge.

The loft of a wedge and the groves on the face of the club both work together to produce a spin rate, since the loft of a wedge is just another way of measuring the angle at which it hits the ball of off the ground, which in turn determines the trajectory of the ball and the amount of roll it produces. This is the reason why golf wedges are offered in degrees that vary from 47 to 64 degrees in order to better cater to surface conditions, as well as the distance and angle required to reach that distance.

What your golf academy instructor will tell you, and what all pros and serious golfers know, is that Golfers with a low handicap, less than ten strokes over par should have four wedges. Mid handicap golfers in the 11-25 handicap bracket should have three wedges, and golfers that are new with a 26 handicap or higher should begin with both a pitching wedge and a sand wedge.
