The Golf Club that Made Callaway Famous

Driving golf balls long and straight down the fairway is one of golf's greatest thrills. Unfortunately, before Ely Reeves Callaway, Jr. arrived on the scene, the higher handicap golfer rarely had this great experience. Then, in 1991, Callaway introduced the Big Bertha driver.
Named for the great German Big Bertha howitzer, the Callaway Big Bertha driver featured a revolutionary change in golf equipment- a large volume club head.

With the appearance of the big headed driver, a 190 cc steal head golf club, the perfect drive was as close as your nearest golf store. The secret was in the large head with the increased sweet spot.

Before, only a near perfect meeting of the club and ball would result in a great drive. Now, the Big Bertha driver allowed more room for error and if the swing wasn't exactly perfect the golf ball would still rocket down the fairway.

Since introducing the first Big Bertha, Callaway has continually tried to improve
the driver. Improved versions have appeared as the "Great Big Bertha" and the "Biggest Big Bertha". But Callaway wasn't finished. They introduced titanium models including the Grand Big Bertha Hawkeye Titanium driver. Titanium drivers are designed to lighten the club head without sacrificing distance. The great Big Bertha Hawkeye titanium driver became an overnight success.

At the same time the USGA began to allow increased club head size. The maximum has now gone from the original 190 cc limit to a hefty 460 cc's. As the club head size increased, the Callaway Big Bertha 454 driver and the Callaway Big Bertha 460 driver made their appearance.

With the dramatic improvements in golf club metallurgy, a ladies Callaway Big Bertha 460 driver became available, proving that women can use a large club head driver. Callaway's patented Fusion technology, fuses (hence the name) titanium and a carbon composite. This helps redistribute the club head weight and move it away from the center of gravity. This subtle change increases the club's stability. The result is even more distance and improved accuracy. Callaway has also designed a shallower face and flatter shape into the Big Bertha driver, further increasing distance and accuracy.

The results are not unnoticed by the touring pros. Both Phil Mickelson and Gary Player have strongly endorsed the Callaway driver.

While Callaway Golf was built on the Big Bertha driver, it has developed a complete line of golf clubs and equipment. It expanded its fusion technology into its sets of fairway woods. It also offers a Fusion FT-3 driver which has been endorsed by Annika Sorenstam. It also offers a complete line of golf irons, golf bags, golf shoes and even Big Bertha golf balls.

The Big Bertha Callaway

One of the greatest thrills in playing golf is to drive the ball long and straight down the fairway and into the greens. Unfortunately, the pleasure and thrill was not experienced by anyone before Ely Callaway Jr arrived on the scene. In 1991, Callaway introduced the Big Bertha Callaway driver. The Big Bertha had a revolutionary ‘large volume club head’.

One could experience that perfect drive with this 190cc steel head golf club. The large head with the increased sweet spot was what they called the secret to it all.

This Big Bertha Callaway enabled a great drive even when the contact between the club and the ball was not so perfect.Earlier, this would have been only a dream.The big bertha allowed more room for error and gave even the not so professional and avid golfers a sweet shot down the fairway.

Since introducing the big head driver, Callaway has always tried to improve upon its models and designs. The improved clubs by the names of ‘Great Big Bertha’ and the ‘Biggest Big Bertha’ have been introduced. But still, Callaway wasn’t too satisfied with the performance of the drivers. He wanted a much more lighter and accurate and sleek design. This is when he introduced the Grand Big Bertha Hawkeye Titanium driver. Titanium is a very light yet very strong metal and thus it considerably reduces weight of the driver without sacrificing on the distance and the strength. The Big bertha Hawkeye was a complete sellout. It completely took over the markets overnight.

This time around the USGA began introducing measures to allow big headed drivers in the game. With the increased club size trend all around, the company introduced the Callaway big bertha 454 driver and the Callaway Big Bertha 460 driver.

New technology and the super big market of women golf drew the manufacturers to introduce the Big Bertha 460 driver for women, proving to the world that women could indeed use and handle big head clubs. Callaway uses a unique Fusion technology (patented by him), which as the name suggests fuses titanium and a carbon composite. This immensely helps to evenly distribute the weight of the club head move it a little away from the centre of gravity. This very minute change of the position of the centre of mass highly increases the stability of the club. It thus offers a greater distance and excellent accuracy. Callaway has also designed a shallower face and a flatter one with the Big Bertha clubs which help improve accuracy and efficiency all the more.

All the technology that goes into the making of the drivers is got after detailed and elaborate tests and many tests on the greens. What is got is a highly advanced club that does not go unnoticed by the pros. Phil Mickelson and Gary Player has endorsed Callaway drivers to the hilt.

How to Kill your Competitors Product and Get a Great Big Laugh While Doing it

I’ll never forget the day one of my competitors began copying and imitating our products and services! At first it was “flattering†or at least I told myself that, in order to not get flaming mad. I kept telling myself, “it’s competition that makes the world go-roundâ€.

After several months of seeing similar ads, same size, same publications, same frequency and then showing up at the same tradeshows, I decided to do something about it. I did so in an up front, aggressive, in your face, humiliating, embarrassing, and however legit way, that ended my competitions tradeshow appearances once and forever!!

I knew our product was far more superior and much more stable than that of our competitors. It was irritating to see them capitalize on our advertising efforts and “piggy back†on our success by having a “me too†product. Reading and hearing their claims of how our product was trash and nothing but garbage caused me to take action. My company used their negative comments and turned them into an advertising campaign, that led to the demise of their product and we enjoyed every minute of it.

Due to such similarity in our product and our competition, we often received bitter phone calls about their product. So many calls came in each month that we got smart and started offering a discount on our product if they wanted to “switchâ€! All they had to do was send us their non-working competing product and we discounted our product (usually 30%, sometimes more if needed) and shipped it to them with a full warranty guarantee and support.

By offering the “switch†it was doing several things for us.

1 – It made us look good, better than our competition. Customers couldn’t believe we would actually take a “dead†trade-in for our superior working product! Knowing that we didn’t manufacture the inferior product astounded them.

2 – It increased our sales. By fielding the “unhappy camper†calls that were coming into our office by mistake, we turned them into positive “happy campersâ€.

3 – Our reputation as “the good guys†became even more pronounced. Customers throughout our industry were singing praises about our customer service and our product popularity.

4 – Customers began to advertise our product for us. Many of our customers supplied us with personal written testimonies that were then used in trade magazine publications and displayed at industry tradeshows.

As if this wasn’t enough, we then began to publicize our offer while attending national and international tradeshows. This was by far the most effective and best “kill your competition†move; we’ve ever done in our entire 21 years of business.

Remember, they were claiming our product was trash, nothing but garbage. If you listen closely enough to your competitions rhetoric, you can glean some pretty nifty ideas. Especially if you’re inclined to fire back with some “in your face†type claims and back them up with sound action and documentation. It’s been reported that “documentation†beats “conversation†and we had hard-core proof that our competitions product was, well … TRASH!

The best “in your face†action … we hung an acrylic (see through) trash can from the top of our booth at all tradeshow appearances that said, “CAN THE LINKâ€! (The Link was the name of their product). Stuffed inside the trashcan were gobs of their product!! Jammed in the can, hanging over the edges and dangling 10 feet in the air for all to see. It was so effective that customers were taking pictures of it and giving us “high fives†as a way of support and encouragement. At one particular show it was becoming such an attraction that the Executive Director of the tradeshow asked me to take it down. I asked him if we were violating any tradeshow policies, he said no. So, I politely refused and informed him of the nasty tactics of the competition and let the director know it was our intention to increase the pressure at upcoming shows. We would do this by hanging more trashcans and get larger ones if needed.

To add to the humility some customers had decided (all on their own doing) to wear bright pink t-shirts to the tradeshow that said negative things about the Link. Even worse than just walking around displaying the shirts, they stood outside their booth until the owner of the competing company wrote them a refund check!

That my friends, is the way to kill your competitors product and get a great big laugh while doing it!
