First, you would need to know what a set of clubs is made up of. There are four main types of golf clubs: the Woods, the Irons, the Wedges and the Putter. Today, you may also come across hybrid clubs. A hybrid club is a cross of a wood and an iron. People who are having a hard time hitting their long irons, like a 2 or 3 iron, prefer to use these clubs. You are allowed to have up to 14 clubs and could be in any combination. An example of a good combination for your golf clubs would be one driver, one 4 wood, 3 through 9 iron, a lob wedge, a gap wedge, a sand wedge, a pitching wedge and one putter. However, the combination would entirely be up to you or the golfer as different combinations work for different people.

You then need to know your available options as you buy your golf clubs. You can either buy used or new. Although you would definitely save more if you choose to buy used golf clubs, you may encounter some issues like cracked shafts, worn grips and other problems that a new set would surely not have. If you are buying your first set, it usually makes more sense to buy new ones.

After deciding on buying a new or old set, you now have to decide if you will be getting a complete set or will just buy individual clubs by your own to make one set. Putting together your own set would be a bit more expensive compared to just buying a set of clubs that is already complete. Purchasing a complete set also saves you the hassle and the time in making decisions.

If you are a beginner, it is recommended to buy the complete starter set, which includes one driver, a 3 wood, a 5 wood, the 3 through 9 irons, one pitching wedge and your putter. This could also include one sand wedge and a bag for your golf clubs. Although this set only has 11 or 12 clubs, as your game progresses, you could decide for yourself on which club to add to your set. You could eventually add a 2 iron, another wedge or a hybrid club.

Keep in mind that getting expensive golf clubs will not improve your game or help you play better. You should not spend $300 on just one driver if you could spend a lot less to get everything you need in one package. Now, let's have a look at the different types of clubs.

Drivers & Fairway woods

These clubs are used to hit longer shots. That's a basic yet apt way to look at it. If a golf hole is a par four or five from tee to green, most golfers would choose to use a wood.

The driver, or the 1 Wood, has the lowest loft of any golf club. Loft is the angle of the club face that controls trajectory and affects distance. A driver has a loft between 7 and 12 degrees. Better golfers have traditionally favored drivers with less than 10 degrees of loft, which require a lot more skill to hit.

Most golfers also carry a #3 and #5 fairway wood as part of their arsenal. A #3 wood has a loft of 15 degrees, and a #5 wood has a loft of 18 degrees. The higher the golf club number, the higher the loft. The #3 and #5 wood are commonly referred to as fairway woods, because they are most often used during the second shot of play, when you are supposed to be on the fairway.

Hybrids

Hybrids are a recent innovation to golf. A hybrid is a combination of an iron and a wood and is an easier to hit alternative to a long iron. Hybrids are versatile enough to be used in any situation. Hybrids come in a range of four lofts - 16 (#2), 19 (#3), 22 (#4) and 25 (#5) Degrees. Hybrids replace their equivalent number long iron, e.g. a #3 hybrid will replace a #3 iron and a #2 hybrid can be used to replace a #5 fairway wood.

Irons

Irons are generally used for shorter distances and more control than drivers and fairway woods. The closer you are to the green, the higher the iron you will use. A standard set of irons consists of #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8 and #9 and the PITCHING WEDGE (PW). A sandwedge is generally a good option to purchase for shots out of sand traps. The #3 and #4 irons are harder to hit than the higher numbered irons. Many golfers choose to replace the #3 and #4 iron with higher lofted woods or hybrids which are easier to hit than traditional long irons, resulting in comparable distances.

Wedges

Wedges are really just specialty irons. The first wedge is the Pitching Wedge (PW), which is usually between 52 and 56 degrees in loft. The PW is the highest lofted iron in a standard set and lowest loft of the wedges. Lob wedges range from 58 to 64 degrees and are used for close range short and high shots to overcome obstacles close to the green. Wedges are extremely useful for your short game and it is beneficial to keep a selection of them in your bag.

Sand Wedges are another type of wedge and are designed to get you out of the dreaded sand traps. They have a shorter shaft and a more angled face to get under the ball in order to exit a bunker.

Putters

As the adage goes "Drive for show, Putt for dough". The putter usually gets you in the hole, so it can be assumed, that choosing the right putter is critical to your game. Putters come in various styles and types.: short, belly, long, bent, center-hosel, heel-toe, mallet, and so on. When choosing a putter the main things to consider are the: weighting, balance and feel. Better putters provide alignment aids to help you visualize the line from your ball to the target.

Why sometimes do people use a 5 iron on the edge of the green instead of pitching wedge?

Unless there is some obstacle between your ball and the hole, you should always choose the club that gets the ball rolling on the green the fastest. With a 5-iron, you can land the ball very quickly and let it roll, whereas with a more lofted club, you'll have to fly the ball further in the air to get it to the hole. It's all about margin of error. In golf, it's very difficult to hit the perfect shot, so you must play the odds. A little swing with a 5-iron has less moving parts than a larger swing with a more lofted club.

The Golf Pitching Tip

A golf pitching shot will help you over some sort of obstacle such as long grass, sand, or water between you and the hole.

You can use a pitching wedge, sand wedge, or a 9-iron each of which will fly the ball a different height and have a different amount of roll afterward. If you are able to use more than one club to hit a pitch shot, you certainly more chances to be successful.

Therefore, golf pitching shot is about using a golf club with the right loft at the correct time because many golfers tend to make the mistake of using the wrong loft at the wrong time.

The pitch shot is really just a longer chip shot on the backswing, with a little more body turn on the downswing and follow through. During setting up, let your left foot moving backward from the target line. This will set your feet into an open position. The body line string is pointing well away from the target line. As you are aware, a full swing setup would see these two lines being parallel. However when hitting a pitch shot they are not.

Set your weight leaning a little bit more onto your left foot. This eliminates any unnecessary movement during the swing and will give you more consistency.

The ball should be placed right in between your heels when your feet are square. This is the middle of your stance.

At the same time, your hands should be slightly ahead of the ball which is also a strong impact position at your address position. To test whether your hand is in the right position, get into your final setup position and let go of your club. It should drop and hit the inside of your left leg. If your club falls between your legs, there is a good chance you will either hit behind the ball which is the scenario you want to avoid.

Having said this, a common mistake committed by many golfers in golf pitching shot is their tendency to ‘lift’ the ball up in the air even when making a pitch shot with a sand wedge.

When you are pitching over a bunker using a lofted club, (say 50 degrees of loft at least), just let the loft of the club do the work for you. Don’t try and lift the ball otherwise you’d end up either fluffing (A shot that flies substantially longer than desired) it or you’d hit it halfway up the ball, thinning the ball (the club often striking the ball near its equator) and flying over the green.

If you have got a seven iron in your hand and you try to pitch and roll the ball along the ground to keep it low, don’t flick your wrist and try to lift the ball up in the air because that’s not the idea of the shot. Many high handicapped golfers find they fluff it behind the ball because they try and lift it.

The idea is to keep the ball low and running, so you need to try and keep the club loft doing that work for you. Hence in all golf pitching shots never lift it up in the air since clubs are designed with the right degree of loft on them to do the work for you.
